January 2026

This winter we’ve been spending a lot of time watching birds. In the quiet of the woods, birdwatching has become less about identifying species and more about practicing attention: learning where to look, how long to wait, and which small changes in movement or sound mean that something is there. The landscape begins to feel different when you watch it this closely. A seemingly empty tree becomes a gathering place; a call from across the creek reveals an invisible neighbor; tracks in the snow continue a story after its author has disappeared. Paying attention is a way of acknowledging that the world is full of lives proceeding alongside our own, whether or not we happen to notice them. Before we can think seriously about reciprocity—about what we owe the places and creatures around us—we have to learn how to see them.

What's happening in each sector this month:

1AC. We begin the year by practicing attention, revisiting the people, projects, and relationships that make up American Cyborg. Before deciding what comes next, we take time to observe what is already here, including the quieter contributions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

2RO. We consider observation as the foundation of documentation. Before an artwork can be cataloged, measured, or described, someone must spend time looking at it. How might Rookery encourage artists to notice details rather than simply collect data?

3EX. We spend the winter watching birds, learning to recognize the small movements, sounds, and traces that reveal the lives unfolding around us. Birdwatching becomes a practice of attention, reminding us that the world is full of activity whether or not we happen to notice it.

4PG. We revisit the Peridot Green salons as exercises in looking closely, considering how the arrangement of objects, artworks, and environments can invite visitors to slow down and discover relationships they might otherwise overlook.

5BC. We turn our attention to the birds and landscapes of the fifty states, considering how patient observation can reveal a place more fully than any itinerary. What might we discover by spending more time looking and less time moving?
