February 2026

Last month we practiced paying attention; this month we’ve been thinking about what comes next. To notice the lives around us is also to recognize the countless exchanges that make our own lives possible: plants turn sunlight into food, animals move seeds across the landscape, fungi connect forests beneath our feet, people care for one another, and machines extend what our bodies and minds can do. Reciprocity asks us to see ourselves inside these systems rather than standing apart from them. The exchange is rarely equal or immediate, and it isn’t a transaction. It is an ongoing practice of receiving, responding, tending, and giving back. If attention teaches us that we are surrounded by other lives, reciprocity reminds us that we are already in relationship with them.

What's happening in each sector this month:

1AC. We consider reciprocity as a guiding principle for the collective: how artists, collaborators, and communities sustain one another through exchanges of time, knowledge, resources, and care. What does it mean to give back to the people and places that make our work possible?

2RO. We explore the relationship between artists and their tools, considering how technology can support rather than extract from creative practice. A good archive should give something back to its maker, transforming the labor of documentation into new possibilities for understanding and connection.

3EX. We move from January's practice of attention to February's theme of reciprocity, exploring the countless exchanges between plants, animals, fungi, people, and machines that sustain our lives. To observe the world is also to recognize our responsibilities within it.

4PG. We revisit Symbolic Symbiotic, considering communication as an exchange that extends beyond language and even beyond human participants. How might an exhibition become a place where artworks, environments, technologies, and visitors respond to one another?

5BC. We consider our relationship with the landscapes we travel through, exploring the difference between visiting a place and participating in its stewardship. What can travelers give back to the communities and ecosystems from which they receive so much?
